In the jewelry industry, carat and karat may sound the same, but they refer to separate measurements for different precious materials. Learn the distinct meanings and purposes of carat versus karat so you can understand the value of your items.
Carat Measurement vs. Karat Measurement
The difference between carat and karat is that carats measure diamond and gemstone weights, and karats measure gold purity. These measurements impact the jewelry’s overall value, with a higher score for either of these values indicating a higher price for the item. Knowing your jewelry’s carat and karat values can inform your decisions and ensure fair transactions.
What Is a Carat?
A common misconception is that the term “carat” refers to a diamond’s size, but it actually refers to a diamond’s weight. It is the scale used to weigh any gemstone, but it is most used in conversations surrounding diamonds.
The carat value is determined by weighing the diamond on a specially calibrated scale. The value is presented as a decimal value. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. In context, diamonds used for engagement rings typically range from 0.5 carat to 2 carats. Adjacent weights can look visually similar in size. This weight will remain constant unless the diamond is recut or damaged.
Carat is one of the four C’s of a diamond, which work together to indicate its level of quality. The most important C ultimately depends on your personal preference.
- Cut: A diamond’s cut refers to how effectively its facets interact with light. An ideal cut maximizes surface area and is more brilliant than a fair cut. Cut is not synonymous with the diamond’s shape, which is its overall outline.
- Clarity: Fewer inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface flaws) result in a clearer diamond. Their size, number and position impact the diamond’s overall clarity. Most impurities are microscopic and do not impact the overall beauty of the diamond.
- Color: The scale starts at colorless, icy white D diamonds and goes all the way to Z. D diamonds are the rarest. Color is more noticeable as carat weight increases.
- Carat: A carat is the globally recognized unit of measurement for a diamond’s weight. Diamonds with the same carat values may appear different depending on the other three C’s.

What Is a Karat?
Karat refers to gold purity, meaning the amount of pure gold compared to any other metal alloys found in the item. This term was introduced after ”carat” to distinguish gold purity from gemstone weight. There are several scientific procedures performed to precisely measure karat gold purity.
A karat is expressed as a whole number out of 24 total parts of the gold item. When all 24 parts are pure gold, you have 24-karat gold — 100% pure gold. 18 gold parts out of 24 total parts make up 18-karat gold, which is 75% gold. 14-karat gold is 58.3% gold, and 8-karat gold is 33.3% gold and so on.
Orangey-yellow pure gold is soft and requires the most careful handling to prevent surface damage, so metal alloys are often added to gold jewelry to improve its strength. Lower karat gold jewelry is better suited for daily wear because it is more durable than pure, 24-karat gold. The added alloys can also impact the gold’s shine and color:
- Yellow gold: Blending silver and copper with gold maintains the yellow hue. This process creates the traditional look that gold jewelry is most known for.
- White gold: Its white, silvery appearance results from mixing nickel and zinc. White gold is often rhodium-plated to enhance shine and durability.
- Rose gold: Adding a percentage of copper alloy to gold gives it a warm, pinkish hue. Rose gold complements modern and classic styles.
