The Most Expensive Rolex Watches

The Most Expensive Rolex Watches: Record-Breaking Timepieces

There’s one word that comes to mind when we think of Rolex — luxury. It’s a brand that radiates sophistication and innovation. They dominate the high-end watch market, and for good reason. Their watches are works of art, balanced with unrivaled craftsmanship and exceptional durability.

Various Rolex watches have become high-value investment pieces due to their rarity, demand and unique details. Clearly, time is a luxury. But why are these watches so valuable? What makes them so special? To understand what makes Rolex such a desirable investment, we’ll explore the most expensive Rolex watches ever sold.

What Makes Certain Rolex Watches Extremely Valuable?

Rolex wristwatches are the most sought-after timepieces in the world for many reasons. These reasons include things like unusual materials and color combinations, unique dial variants, celebrity influence and limited production models. Here’s why certain Rolex watches are extremely valuable in the market:

  • Rarity and limited production: Various Rolex models are limited productions, making them more challenging to find and purchase. If these rare watches are in high demand, their market value increases, making them more expensive.
  • Celebrity and historical association: Rolex watches gain demand when they’re associated with high-profile celebrities and historical events. For instance, the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona.
  • Model design: Unique features and configurations enhance the value of Rolex watch models. Think uncommon dial designs, interesting color combinations and unusual materials used to create a striking masterpiece.
  • Authenticity and condition: These elements are just as important as the watch’s features. Models with their original parts and proof of authentication, in good condition, could see a spike in value.

7 of the Most Expensive Rolex Watches Ever Sold

Now that you know what makes a Rolex ultra-valuable, let’s take a look at some of the most expensive Rolex watches sold to date. We’ll highlight their unique features and interesting facts that have made them the most desired models in the world.

1. Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona — $17.8 Million (2017)

Movie star, Paul Newman, was gifted a Rolex 6239 Daytona by his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, in 1968 to mark the beginning of his racing career. And ever since being spotted sporting this Rolex, the Paul Newman connection began. A standout feature of this watch is the engraved inscription on its back, reading “Drive Carefully, Me.”

But there’s more that makes it special, like the “exotic” dial. Featuring contrasting tri-colored sub-dials, square-tipped blocky markers, Art-Deco style numerals, stepped minute track and red accents, this design is unique and extraordinary. In the 60s and 70s, this design was not as desirable as others, leading to limited production and making it a highly valued piece today.

In October 2017, the movie star’s watch was auctioned at Phillips in New York by James Cox, the former boyfriend of Newman’s daughter. The watch sold for a whopping $17.75 million, setting the record for the most expensive wristwatch ever sold.

2. The Rolex “The Unicorn” Daytona — $5.9 Million (2018)

The Rolex 6265 Daytona is the only vintage watch of its kind known, crafted in 18K white gold with a striking black Sigma dial. The watch also features a manual-wind Calibre 727 movement, contrasting silver graphics, and a stainless steel crown that adds a unique touch.

The Unicorn is mysterious. There’s very little known about the origin and the history of this beauty. However, there are reports that the piece was commissioned by a German retailer in 1970.

In 2017, Italian watch enthusiast John Goldberger consigned the watch for auction at Phillips, where it sold for $5.9 million.

3. The Bao Dai Rolex — $5.1 Million (2017)

The diamond-encrusted Bao Dai Rolex was commissioned by the last Emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai, in Geneva in 1954. The rare Rolex 6062 is one of three known black-dial models that have diamond markers. But there are more distinctive features that contribute to its rarity. While the two other watches feature six diamond markers at odd-numbered hours, the Bao Dai Rolex has five diamond markers at the even hours, along with a different dial layout.

Set in a yellow gold Oyster-type case with a triple calendar and a moonphase display, the Bao Dai is a more playful design that effortlessly balances visual flair with elegance. It plays a big part in why this timepiece ranks high on any collector’s list.

Auctioned at the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction: FIVE back in mid-2017, this beauty sold for $5.1 million after an eight-minute bidding session.

4. Rolex Daytona “The Legend” — $3.7 Million

The Legend is known for its unusual lemon grené dial, 18K gold Oyster case, Valjoux 727 movement and three black sub-dials with white graphics. It’s one of only three of its kind known and is one of the rarest Paul Newman variants. This dial is what makes it one of the most sought-after pieces in the world.

It’s also nicknamed “The Lemon” for its distinctive yellow dial, a highly unusual feature compared to the cream or champagne-colored dials typically seen on Rolex watches.

This scarce piece was auctioned at Phillips in 2017 and received a cool $3.7 million.

5. Rolex Daytona “The Neanderthal” — $3.01 Million

Released in 1966, this Rolex Daytona was dubbed “The Neanderthal” because of its “pre-Paul Newman” dial design. There’s no other model in the Rolex catalog with this specific dial and unique color scheme, making it a rare collectible.

Its design is minimalist, with chunky sub-dial markers and oversized subsidiary dials that almost touch the white seconds track, setting it apart from other Daytonas. What makes this watch desirable is that it’s the first Cosmograph with screw-down chronograph pushers, which led to improved water resistance in future watch designs.

“The Neanderthal” was sold at a Phillips auction in October 2018 for over $3 million.

6. Rolex Antimagnetique Ref. 4113 — $2.5 Million

One of only 12 ever made, this model is a rarity because it was designed for and gifted exclusively to select racing teams and their racers.

This watch represents Rolex’s early connection to the sporting world, featuring specific design elements tailored for sports. Only 8 of the 12 watches made are registered.

The Antimagnetique is known as the largest Rolex, featuring a 44 mm dial perfect for quick readings of tracked information, a thin steel casing and raised pink gold Arabic markers.

Although never made for the public, this limited-edition Rolex is highly sought after, which explains its position on our list. It sold at a Phillips auction for almost $2.5 million in 2016. It was sold again in April 2024 for over $3 million through Monaco Legend Auctions.

7. Rolex Deep Sea Special — $2.1 Million

The Rolex Deep Sea Special (DSS) was originally part of a private museum collection at the Wuppertaler Uhrenmuseum. The museum received the watch from Rolex during the 1970s. In 2001, it was removed from the museum and sold at Auktionen Dr. Crott, then making its auction debut in November 2005 at Christie’s. It reentered into auction in November 2021, where it sold for just over $2 million.

The rugged watch boasts an especially pronounced domed high glass, making it a “standout” feature for this model. As the name suggests, it was created with diving in mind and is said to reach depths of over 35,000 feet.

Investing in High-Value Rolex Watches: What You Need to Know

Before investing in a Rolex, there are a few things you need to know. Yes, you want to own one for its superior durability, striking design and prestige. But owning a Rolex goes beyond that. You also need to think about additional factors like maintenance, insurance, potential appreciation, watch market trends and more.

Market Trends

With any investment, the value either increases or decreases depending on the market. It’s essential to understand common trends before investing. Stay on top of the markets by monitoring auctions, dealer prices and Rolex releases to pinpoint when it’s the right time to buy.

Timing is everything, and some factors influence Rolex’s market prices:

  • Demand: The more people who want a Rolex, the more the price increases.
  • Economics: During difficult economic times, demand may decrease and result in lower prices.
  • Discontinuations and releases: When popular models are discontinued, prices rise due to limited supply.
  • Celebrity provenance: When a celebrity wears a specific Rolex model, demand for that model could spike.

Authentication and Condition Assessment

When investing in a Rolex, it’s essential to keep all of the paperwork, the original box and its packaging. These items are necessary for proof of authenticity and also add value if you decide to sell your watch in the future. Without the original box and paperwork, the value of your investment will decrease.

The same goes for the watch’s condition. The smallest imperfections, like a small dent, a scratch on the glass and damaged or missing parts, could affect the resale value. Ensuring you take proper care of the timepiece and avoid modifications and unoriginal parts will help prevent further depreciation.

As Rolex watches are desirable, there are bound to be counterfeit versions. Ensure you know which features to look for to determine whether it’s the real deal or a fake. These details can be the laser-etched crown, the cyclops lens and the serial number.

Storage, Insurance and Maintenance

An investment of this magnitude is a big responsibility. To preserve the value of your Rolex, storage and maintenance, and the added security of insurance are essential.

When storing your prized possession, be sure to:

  • Place it upright or flat in a secure and cool place, such as a watch box or safe.
  • Keep the watch away from humidity, high temperatures and magnetic fields.
  • Wind the watch occasionally to keep it running smoothly.

Service the watch about every 10 years by qualified technicians.

Current Rolex Models Likely to Appreciate in Value

Looking to invest in a unique Rolex timepiece? There are a few current models with high appreciation value:

  • Rolex Cosmograph Daytona (Ref. 126515LN, released in 2023 and 2024)
  • Rolex Perpetual 1908 (Ref. 52508, released in 2023)
  • Rolex GMT-Master II (Ref. 126711CHNR, released in 2018)

These models have high appreciation value potential because of their limited production numbers and distinctive designs.

Testimonials What Our Customers Are Saying

Ernie A.

Carola H

Great customer service and affordable prices. Super happy with my purchase

Mia I.

My husband picked up our engagement rings from here, best day of my life. thanks route 50 for the great selection. I was very pleased

Brad B.

The guys were really honest and straight with me. I went to other shops in the area such as jewelry exchange of tysons and got much much worse treatment. Other places you find either stuck-up trashy people, or extremely rude cut-throats. These guys were regular, nice, and fair; explaining the process to me and how buying/selling and pawning things work. I’d recommend them to a friend.

Michelle P.

Never disappointed. Excellent customer service, very friendly. Very clean store. Great selections.
